Mercury is a toxic element that is ubiquitously present in the environment. If mercury enters the human body either through vapor or food it can get absorbed and accumulated in several tissues rapidly. This can lead to the risky condition of cell death. There are several tests available these days that help in identifying those people who are burdened with mercury in their system.

When people who have dental amalgam fillings chew food they have a highly dangerous level of mercury vapor in their mouth. Mercury can get released from dental fillings after brushing the teeth and taking hot drinks too.

Mercury found in both the organic and inorganic forms is considered to be neurotoxin.

Methyl mercury collects in the brain and gets associated with the lysosomes, endoplasmic reticulum etc. Mercury poisoning is not the outcome of the action on a single target. Instead, the highly reactive nature of mercury may lead to a complex series of effects which ultimately cause cell death. Neurotoxicity caused due to mercury poisoning can manifest itself in several debilitating symptoms. Some of these symptoms are noticed in the delicate physiology of the ear.

The symptoms of neurotoxicity can manifest as:

Researchers have got enough proof about the methyl mercury-induced neurotoxicity through the widespread contamination of the Minamata Bay in Japan. The residents of the fishing villages faced several problems such as tinnitus, muscular weakness etc.

So we find that mercury can cause tinnitus besides several other ailments. In order to protect oneself from the hazards of mercury one should be able to identify the prime source of exposure. In case of mercury it is not difficult to detect the source of exposure as it can be checked out by the presence of dental amalgam and fish intake.

To prevent further exposure to mercury the dental fillings can be extracted by a dentist who is trained in amalgam removal. The use of an oral dam and an alternative source of air can prevent any further mercury poisoning during the procedure.

Sulfur containing compounds such as DMPS, DMSA etc and some nutritional supplements are also used to combat the burden of mercury in the body.

One Response to “Can Mercury Cause Tinnitus?”

  • Paula Ott:

Yes! mercury from dental fillings causes deafness. In 7/1987 a dentist kept saying “mix seven” and shoved so much metal in my tooth that I could not hear the next year. I still cannot hear and have had the metal taken out. Also I have a terrible infection in my gum line now and have even had my jaw bones scraped, ozone treatments, a lots of antibiotics, and nothing helps. Now I suspect I have cancer on the roof of my mouth from the mercury. You can’t see it, but when it drips onto my tongue…it stings. Everything is colored…gray. It affects everything I do. I cannot sleep good. My eyes get all gummed up. My skin on face and back are blotched with dark blotches. I only have 70% hearing in my left ear. I have tried detox…liquid minerals…have done two 6 day liver gall bladder cleanses… am presently taking liver and kidney support. Do castor oil packs on my organs…What next?! please find me a answer. Thanks 12/20/10
