There have been many instances in which people have complained of a chirping sound of the birds in head, without the sound being present anywhere in the surroundings. This happens due to a disorder named tinnitus, which can be defined as the perception of sound without any external stimuli.

Tinnitus can occur due to the following factors:

1. Noise-induced factors.
2. Ototoxic drug such as aspirin.
3. Undiagnosed problems.

Tinnitus is closely associated with a hearing loss. Sometimes people may get exposed to unsafe levels of sound accidentally, as in an explosion. At other times there can be an unprotected exposure when people attend rock concerts or visit noisy restaurants, clubs etc. The loud noise can cause an acoustic trauma and lead to a noise induced hearing loss or NIHL. In such a case the tiny hairs in the inner ear, which play an important role in our hearing process, get damaged. This can cause a hearing loss. Since the damaged hair cells start sending random electric impulses towards the brain, people experience tinnitus also. Earplugs and earmuffs can reduce noise levels substantially.

There have been cases in which people use earplugs oblivious of what others may think about them. The result is that they have a normal hearing capacity even at a ripe old age.

Apart from loud noise there are a lot of drugs that are referred to as ototoxic drugs. These drugs can damage the auditory system and can cause tinnitus as a side-effect. Ironically, some of these drugs are also used to cure tinnitus. Therefore, natural remedies for curing tinnitus are more trustworthy as they are effective and do not cause side-effects. Tinnitus can be cured if the intake of ototoxic drugs is stopped.

Lastly, there are quite a few underlying ailments that can cause tinnitus. They include ear infections, wax impaction, high blood pressure, Eustachian tube blockage, allergy, arterial bruits just to name a few. Tinnitus can be cured in this case if the underlying disorders can be detected and cured.

In some cases tinnitus may be idiopathic or having an unknown cause. If this happens then the treatment of tinnitus aims at making its symptoms such as bird sound ringing, buzzing etc more tolerable. This is usually done by using masking agents that employ white noise to hide the tinnitus noise.
